Whenever there’s any writer’s block in New Birds, I always attempt to cover someone else’s work, to get the creative juices flowing. That’s what these are, for the most part. Some, more rough than others, some more complete, but all of them served a purpose. Some of them weren't really intended for people to hear at the time, but I've grown fonder of them, so here they are, warts and all!
My Friend George features New Bird - Dom Green on bass and guitar, through the magic of modern technology. I started doing this as a bit of a tribute to my favourite cat. It's almost as though Lou was writing about George the cat, some thirty years before he was even born.
Lookin’ For A Love was the first thing I attempted under the name New Birds, back in 2013, with new backing vocals added a few days ago.
Out Of Time was recorded in the heady Winter of 2015, caught up in the excitement of Blur's new album and Melbourne show. It was intended to be played at a small warm up show, after a typically long New Birds hiatus, but that show never actually happened, so no one got to hear this.
Be My Wife was originally recorded in 2004, as a wedding gift for my wife (artwork by aforementioned wife!). This version is a live New Birds performance, a few days after David’s death. Every time I’d rehearsed it, beforehand, I’d not managed to get through it, so this was quite the miracle. It also features New Bird fan - Stu Burns ordering a drink at the bar, in the background.
Grow Till Tall, similarly, was inspired by seeing the mighty Sigur Rós, and LCD Soundsystem last week, hence the mishmash of epic sweeping sounds, and pumping electronica.
